Baker's Dictionary of Astrology, 3 Volume Set
Published in Hardcover by Baker Publications ()
Author: Douglas M. Baker
Average review score:

dictionary of astrology for the twenty first century
Definitely the most advanced book ever written on true astrology. It contains interpretations of virtually every combination of sign, house, planet, etc. possible, some nine thousand. Combine this with Baker's book Esoteric Astrology and you have the true keys to understanding astrology, and more importantly, how to apply it to your life and the lives of all around us. Baker has taken the works of Alice Bailey on the same subject and expanded it with correct modern interpretations, and in a manner that is easier to personally apply than Bailey's. Take Linda Goodman's works and those supermarket astrology books and throw them in the recycling bin. This is the one to read.

Baker's Dictionary of Music
Published in Library Binding by Gale Group (November, 1997)
Authors: Nicolas Slonimsky and Richard Kassel
Average review score:

Worth every penny and then more......
There is no other dictionary of music equal to this one in range, depth, style, and presentation. It presumes music as a whole, not only in its classical cloak. It is a pleasure to read. Individual entries are clear and focused, without the infuriating omissions one has found in various editions of the Oxford or Harvard. Specific topics which in the editors' opinions require greater analysis are given their due in thoroughly inteligent boxed articles, with different background color. To give an idea of the work's scope, here are some samples of regular entries: etiology, major-minor syndrome, Arab music, "A Bicycle Built for Two", Marni Nixon, Picardy third, schnarre, kolo, "Red" Foley, Fluxus, Eduard Steuermann, mescolanza, etc. Of course, all the usually expected items are present, not in dry lexicographic prose but vibrantly and wittily written. Boxed articles include such topics as Music Therapy, Arnold Schoenberg, socialist realism, interval, longevity, Edward MacDowell, Arturo Toscanini, rock, Henry Cowell, César Franck, graphic notation, jazz, etc. The entry on Maria Callas ends by quoting a commentator who said: "If an orgasm could sing, it would sound like Maria Callas." Slonimsky concludes "Pleanostically speaking, she was an incarnation of carnality." The book is printed on sturdy, beautiful paper, standard type, and has numerous photographs throughout, including one of Carmen Miranda. The binding is meant to last and be passed on.

This is a work to cherish. I cannot imagine a music lover who would not treasure it. This edition was edited after Slonimsky's death. There may not be another version coming. I encourage anyone with a serious interest in Music to get it before it goes out of print. Music is here, presented with depth and elegance, in all her infinite variety.

Baker's Dozen
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (September, 1996)
Author: Michael M. Thomas
Average review score:

Another great one from Mr. Thomas
Michael Thomas is one of the best authors writing on financial fiction. I have read all his books and am a huge fan..His books have contained plots and sub plots and are certainly packed with descriptive tales of intrigue and deceipt. Bakers Dozen does not disapoint. H.A. Baker is a tricky character..a man with honor that would face you in a duel today if you asked. This book is a great read..thanks Mr. Thomas for several hours of fun!

Baker's Encyclopedia of Hatpins and Hatpin Holders
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (April, 1998)
Author: Lillian Encyclopedia of Hatpins and Hatpin Holders Baker
Average review score:

The hatpin and hatpin holder collectors bible
This superb book will interest the collector and historians alike. It is a great tribute to Lillian Baker, the queen of hatpin collectors. She passes on her tremendous knowledge and experience with the aid of a well catalogued album. This shows colour plates of many hatpins indexed by the different types of materials used. Gold, silver, brass, glass, porcelain, ivory and many other hatpins adorned with diamonds, pearls, amethysts, etc show what a diversity of collections are possible. They are catalogued by type, manufacturer, style or period over the past 150 years or so. A historical perspective on their development shows how they were made and the many types of legitimate fixings. Examples of fake hatpins are also shown. There is also a similar catalogue of a vast range of hatpin holders and vanity sets also in colour. The book is worth the money for the pictures alone and is what you would expect of the author who managed to persuade friends with rare and expensive or unusual hatpins and holders to allow them to be catalogued. There is even an explanation of the origins of pinmoney and the need for hatpin to be one word not two. The only disappointment is the lack of any indicator of values, as this was also the authors area of expertise. This book is unlikely to be repeated so buy it now - it will be a collectors piece soon.

Baker's Hawk
It's too bad amazon.com doesn't have this book in print. I got it at the library for a quarter, and certainly wasn't wasting my money because this book is terrific. It deals with the relationship between father and son in a hard time, and the problems Billy has when going to "the crazy man" to train his hawk.

Baking With Passion: Exceptional Recipes for Real Breads, Cakes, and Pastries
Published in Hardcover by Thunder Bay Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Dan Lepard, Richard Whittington, and Peter Williams
Average review score:

10 Stars if I Could!
Buy this book now! Even if you never make any of the recipes, the pictures and layout are worth the price.

If you're a novice baker, this isn't the book for you. Some of the recipes are a bit involved. You must, must make the Kranz Cake, even if it does demand an overnight rest of the dough...

Bear in mind this is a British book, so you'll need a set of scales as well as a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion to make anything from the book (unless this edition is already converted - I got my copy in the UK).
